Sorry it isn't as flowery as the SBU rundown, but the muse was not with me.

Ripon was founded in 1872 as a port for the newly discovered inland mining boom of the time. At the time, and even a few years after the gold rush of 82 was over, it was expected that it would eclipse Capital City in population and resorces and might even become the new seat of Government in the State, but with flow of gold diminishing in the mid 1880s, it looked as if the community of Ripon might very well become just another backbush ghost town.

This changed when, in 1904, Iron Ore was found just 180 km inland from Ripon and its port was reopened again for export.

In 1910, the Inland Rail Project joined Ripon and the inland mining areas, cementing Ripon as the primary industrial port of the state. The small shipbuilding industry that had existed since its founding was given a large boost by the commissioning of a Royal Australian Naval Shipyards to be built in Ripon in 1925-1931. It is functional, in a private capacity to this day, building commercial vessels for various regional corporations. Ripon was involved with the war effort, seeing a high amount of military presence to protect the Shipyards from Japanese subs. Unfortunately, much of the infrastructure built at this time was abandoned shortly after VJ day.

In the late 1980s, The sprawl of Capital City had become large enough to start to encompass Ripon as more and more people left the CBD for homes on the ocean. This trend continues to this day and has made Ripon one of the more desirable locations for holiday homes and upscale retirement villages.

The region saw a large resurgence of industrial development in the economic boom of the 1990s, and large numbers of Petrochemical and Manufacturing facilities opened their primary offices in the Ripon metro area. This, in turn, has lead to an increased call for skilled and qualified workers in the areas of Engineering, Laboratory Sciences and High Tech, who are increasingly coming from Ripon's own population. Ripon has encouraged this trend, offering tax-diminished zones for industries and forming Technology Parks in order to maximize service coverage and cooperative business strategies.

Population as of 2004: 157000
Major Industries: Mining Support Firms (sales, service, analysis), Petrochemicals
Minor Industries: IT, Biomedical Technologies
Further Learning Institutions: TAFE Centre, Sara Bellum University, Ripon University (small Liberal Arts Uni -Resident Student Population of 2ooo)

Here is what Kerry Want

Hello Team,
First, let me just extend a warm welcome to our newest member. Jennifer's the name right? oh well, correct me if I am wrong. We are very excited to have you in our group.

On a more serious note:
I had a talk with Kerry after class today because I wasn't sure what she was expecting of us and how much we were supposed to present in our 20mins. So she said to me, what we have to do is just present an overview of everything about our project. For example, she said we could present our budget amount first like, here's our fig. and here is how we proposed to do this OR here is what we planned to do and this is what we came up with for our budget. Whatever we do, we need to convince her that what we propose is feasible.

So I think everything would be about how we fit things into the budget right?

The Building

Planning the library
- Location and site factors
- Planing the library
- Space Design

1. Location and site factors

  • Good access to public as well as private modes of transport with facilities provided for library users who arrive on bicycles or are disabled in any way. Also, since the inforcenter is in the technology park, pedestrians are taken into consideration.
  • The Center is conveniently accessed via attractive & safe urban space.
  • The SBI Center should have an area to pause and reflect about the information sought and to meet colleages and friends to discussed and gather their thoughts before leaving.
  • SBI Center will not open directly on to a busy road/street since, user's wouldn't want to step into a busy street right after the quiet and serene environment of a library.
  • SBI Center have ready access to roads for service and emergency purposes.
  • As the Center is likely to be used in the evenings (after working hours) as well, the access paths as well as the surrounding areas encourage safety and security, by ensuring high level of land use at all times and also by employing natural and closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance in conjunction with hight level of lighting.
  • SBI Center have easily interpreted visual clues towards main entrance from all directions. Eg. Car, bicycle parks and footpaths.
  • Finally, have lots of space to grow with change and can adapt internally. (the statistics yet to be assigned..maybe physical growth of abt 20%?)

2. Planning the library

Issues taken into consideration when planning the building of the SBI Center.

  • The relationship between the functional space as well as social space was taken into consideration.

- Functiona space = books, journals, computer terminals, reading areas, display spots.

- Social space = Cafes and bookshops and meeting areas.

  • Good communication between the parent University , the information center and the partnerships.( here I meant the organisations in the tech park, was not sure what to call them at this stage.)

That's it for now, please feel free to add more if u can think of any...

cheers
